Kate Somerville, PhD is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School Mental Health Collaborative at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She earned her PhD in Educational Foundations, Policy, & Practice from the University of Colorado Boulder and previously served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Youth-Nex at the University of Virginia. She also holds an MA in Teaching from Johns Hopkins University and began her career as an elementary school teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools.

Dr. Somerville’s research focuses on school mental health, youth well-being, educational equity, and youth participatory action research. Her work explores how culturally responsive policies and practices—alongside youth-led action and community engagement—can promote justice and wellness in schools. She has published in AERA Open and Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, and her scholarship has been featured by AERA Trending Topic Research, UCLA Center X’s Just News series, and The Washington Post.

A former NCAA Division III lacrosse player and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Research Scholar, Dr. Somerville is committed to advancing youth-engaged, policy-relevant research in education and public health.
